(10/31/01, 6 p.m. ET) -- Among the many notable tracks on the just-released all-star collection Good Rockin' Tonight: The Legacy Of Sun Records is Paul McCartney's rendition of "That's All Right," the Arthur Crudup song made famous by Elvis Presley. McCartney recorded the song in New York City using former Presley backup musicians Scotty Moore on guitar and D.J. Fontana on drums.
Ahmet Ertegun, the Atlantic Records chief who produced the McCartney sessions, says it's a truly exceptional recording of the classic. "I was absolutely astounded at the incredible talent and musicality of Paul McCartney when we made the version, his version of Elvis Presley's first hit, 'That's All Right Mama,' which he sang with two musicians who had been members of Elvis Presley's band. I think we came up with an incredibly authentic rendition of that."
Ertegun says that authentic flavor revealed McCartney's love for the song. "It sounds like Elvis on the record, to me. He (McCartney) has a feeling of Elvis. It's amazing. Obviously it's a record, it's a song which he, in his youth, really must've loved."
The Good Rockin' Tonight documentary is slated to premiere on PBS's American Masters series on November 28.
